Week 3 (9th September - 15th September)

Updated: Jun 29, 2020

Hi I’m Hugo, writing the blog this week. The first few days of this week went by uneventfully.

On Thursday night, the host (Aunty Carrie) was kind enough to bring us out for dinner at a Chinese Restaurant (Keung’s Delight). We had something similar to chee cheong fun, sweet pork ribs and noodles. Here are some pictures of our dinner.

Friday, 13 September is the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, which is the Mid-Autumn Festival. Aunty Carrie prepared the ingredients for the 2 of us to wrap dumplings with her. It was a fun activity. She also prepared mooncakes, fruits and tea. We had a great dinner with Aunty Carrie and her family. Initially, she wanted to bring us out to 赏月 (Meaning to admire the full moon), however there was a thunderstorm so we didn’t manage to go out.

We placed the huge pumpkin outside the house to use it as decoration.

On Saturday, Qin Yong and I went to explore Downtown Toronto. In the morning, we went to the Distillery District. Some facts about Distillery District. It is pedestrian-only, set in a quaint 19th century buildings that once housed a large whiskey distillery.

After a morning at the Distillery District we headed to Chinatown for lunch.

Thereafter, we continued to explore Chinatown and parts of Kensington Market. We also went to take a look at a vintage shop that Qin Yong suggested.

We then proceeded to the Graffiti Alley not too far away.

We wanted to head to a Polish festival in Downtown Toronto, but took a wrong streetcar and ended back at Eaton Center. We had our dinner and did a little shopping there before heading home early for a good rest as we need to wake up early for a tour on Sunday morning.

We were affected due to early closure of the subway for track works and signal upgrading, similar to what happens with our MRT.

On Sunday, we were at the pick up point (First Markham Place) at 6.30am. We booked a day tour to the Scenic Cave and Blue Mountains from Taipan Tours. Scenic Cave and Blue Mountains is about 2 hours drive up North from Markham. First stop was the Suspension Bridge and Scenic Caves. We first took a tractor to the bridge. From the bridge we overlook the Georgian Bay, which is a part of Lake Huron (1 of the 5 Great Lakes). We even caught a glimpse of the lighthouse on an island. Next we took the tractor back and proceeded to the Scenic Caves. As it was raining on that day, the caves were very slippery, and we only managed to visit 2 caves (Natural Refrigerator and Ice Cave).

Some facts about the Natural Refrigerator

Next, we headed to the Blue Mountains - a Ski Resort, which is a short 10 minutes drive away. We had our lunch before heading for the rides.

We had our lunch, before taking the standing gondola up to the top to admire the view. Thereafter, we went to take the mountain coaster, something which I had found out through my research before our trip there. As the name implies, it is a roller coaster on a mountain. This is unique as you can control your speed downwards. The ride was exhilarating and can go up to a maximum speed of 42km/h. You also get to admire the view on the way downwards. It is definitely a must try if you visit Blue Mountains. Due to the lack of time, the mountain coaster was our last ride and we made our way back to the bus for our ride back to Markham.

Here are some of the food we had over the past few weeks.

That’s it for Week 3, keep a look out for Week 4’s post about some of the exciting events that happened.
